Ted Samodel was born and raised in Norwalk, CT. He was the fifth child of Nick and Marie Samodel, having the dubious honor of having FOUR older sisters. His first instrument was the accordion, which was a short-lived endeavor, as once he heard a trumpet being played at a Boy Scout meeting at age 12, he was hooked for life!

From that point, Ted was involved in everything to do with playing trumpet throughout his school years. After graduating from Brien McMahon High School in 1981, Ted continued his musical training at Western Connecticut State University. He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance degree before going on to University of Bridgeport where he obtained his Master's degree in Music Education and CT Teacher Certification in 1987.

Some of his past trumpet teachers have been Ron Stinson, Jimmy Maxwell, Frank Fighera, and Jon Faddis.

Ted has been teaching in Branford, first at Branford High School as Director of Bands, and currently at JB Sliney Elementary School since 2013. Prior to that, he taught General Music, Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Chorus to grade pre-Kindergarten through grade 6 for Haddam-Killingworth Public Schools from 1987-2001.

Also during that time, he worked as Brass Instructor and Assistant Band Director for the nationally acclaimed Norwalk High School Marching Band from 1985-1995, having been appointed to this position by his former high school Band Director, Jeff Smith. During those 10 years, the NHS Band and brass sections were well-known and well-awarded in competitive marching band circuits throughout the entire east coast and in other parts of the country, a legacy that continues today.

Ted continues to also be an active member of Connecticut Music Educator's Association as a Head Judge for Regional and All State audition festivals each year. As well, he has been sought-after as a guest conductor and clinician.

As an active professional trumpet player, Ted is called for a variety playing engagements throughout the year, including theater orchestras, wedding ceremonies, special events (even playing the National Anthem at minor league baseball games!), and plays in a variety of bands and orchestras as a freelance player, occasionally subbing in jazz groups like the New Haven Jazz Orchestra, and other area big bands.

From 2003-2007, Ted played lead trumpet in his own Contemporary Christian group, Tower of Praise, an 11-piece horn band. He currently plays keyboard on the Worship Team at Grace Community Church in Madison.

"Pursuing music as an active form of worship has become a profound desire, both personally and professionally. My ability to do anything at all musically is a profound gift from God, so seeking to use that gift for His glory in return makes perfect sense".

When not teaching or playing, Ted loves to spend time with his family. His wife is also a teacher, having taught in private and public schools as well as tutoring academic subjects.

In his spare time Ted enjoys listening to music, studying the Bible, producing music projects/events, computers, hiking, biking, working out, sport shooting, and building projects.
